The real truth is all of these dramatized headlines are based on one flawed study by an isolated Italian research laboratory, the Ramazzini Institute. This research laboratory and many media outlets are sensationalizing the study and misleading you. SPLENDA® provides consumers with a safe and great-tasting alternative to sugar and is recommended every day by healthcare professionals to aid in weight loss and diabetes management. This type of fear mongering does a disservice to healthcare providers, their patients and you.
Now, of course, as the CEO of the company that produces SPLENDA® Sweeteners, I would come to its defense. But the truth is, I am a SPLENDA® user and consumer too, and I am really upset about how consumers – you and me – are being misled about a lot of things, but this one hits close to home. Instead of outrageous headlines and misleading stories, how about the headline: “Enough is Enough, Consumers are Smart and Deserve the Truth,” something that is just plain missing from our society these days. The Truth: sucralose, the sweetening ingredient in SPLENDA®, has been extensively researched, with more than 110 studies conducted over 20-years, and has been proven to be safe, with no link to cancer. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the European Food Safety Authority, Health Canada the World Health Organization and the U.S. National Cancer Institute support this conclusion.
In contrast, this Ramazzini Institute report ‘cherry-picks’ data to generate a sensationalist story, and this is the way they operate.
